Summer Strawberries are here!

Summer Strawberries now in our Orchard Market Store

It’s June 1st and feeling like Summer! The warm and humid weather is welcome in Southern Ontario as it brings with it a bounty of fresh Ontario grown fruits and vegetables. The earliest locally grown summer fruit to adorn the shelves in our Orchard market store; strawberries! Not only are strawberries pleasing to the senses with their aromatic smell, deep red colour, and sugary sweet taste, they also boast many health benefits. Strawberries are believed to help reduce the risk of heart disease and certain cancers. They are low in calories and high in vitamins C, B6, K, fiber, folic acid, potassium and amino acids. Some little-known facts about strawberries:

  • Strawberries are the only fruit that has seeds on the outside. That means Strawberries aren’t true berries, like blueberries or grapes. Technically, a berry has its seeds on the inside.

  • Like apples, Strawberries are members of the rose family!

  • The strawberry plant is a perennial and will grow back year after year and remain productive for about five years.

  • Strawberries contain high levels of nitrate, which has been shown to increase blood and oxygen flow to the muscles. Research suggests that people who eat strawberries before exercising have greater endurance and burn more calories.

While they are in season here in Ontario, they will make their way into many dishes, whether baked into crusty pasties such as; strawberry rhubarb scones, canned and preserved as jam, or sliced and mixed into a summer salad there are seemingly endless uses for strawberries.

Tip* Wait to wash strawberries until right before you are ready to eat them, rinsing speeds up the ripening process.
